The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
